Songbird

Have you ever had God sing you a love song before? I have (not bragging, btw).

I like to sometimes lay on my bed and listen to this song. This started for me during Covid, having gone through heartbreak and loss and trials upon trials. Believe it or not, that was the first time I created a vision board for myself– because I literally had NO VISION. I remember thinking, “What will I do? What will I become?” I couldn’t stop crying. I felt completely hopeless, grieving…but something in me pushed me to put life up in words and images everywhere around me. If I could see possible, I could go on. I could start over.

I had never given myself the gift of dreaming a dream for myself. Have you? Thankfully, God knew it was a gift I desperately needed, and he delivered it to me.

As I was sitting on the floor in my bedroom, cutting words out of magazines, this song came on. It was like in that moment, the Lord focused my ears on the words. I closed my eyes to listen, taking it in with all of my senses.. It was “Songbird” by Fleetwood Mac, sung by Eva Cassidy. Listen here.

“For you, there’ll be no more crying
For you, the sun will be shining
Because I feel that when I’m with you
It’s alright, I know it’s right

To you, I’ll give the world
To you, I’ll never be cold
Because I feel that when I’m with you
It’s alright, I know it’s right

And the songbirds are singing
Like they know the score
And I love you, I love you, I love you
Like never before

And I wish you all the love in the world
But most of all, I wish it from myself

And the songbirds keep singing
Like they know the score
And I love you, I love you, I love you
Like never before, like never before

Songs About Birds

I felt seen in that moment. I felt loved in that moment. I wasn’t alone. He was there with me. Sitting in ashes, the Lord gave me this (along with scripture, promises, new vision, and healing). I love you were the words I needed to hear. I needed to hear them over and over again until those “love seeds” as I guess I can call them, took root in my heart. A promise that he would comfort me. He would never cause me pain or tears. That his face would shine upon me as bright as the sun. That he would be gracious to me and give me his peace. That he wanted to give me hope and future.

I have always loved the sounds of bird singing. I always felt like that little bird in, “His Eye Is On The Sparrow” as a child growing up. He knew that when he spoke to me through Songbird. He’s so sweet like that. That’s what makes this song even more special to me. When I close my eyes, I can see the birds singing, flying….just being birds…carefree…. it’s pretty spectacular, actually…and it always makes me smile. I remember back to that day and all He’s brought me through. He keeps his promises and he is faithful.

His Eye Is On The Sparrow

Why should I feel discouraged,
Why should the shadows come,
Why should my heart be lonely,
And long for heav’n and home;
When Jesus is my portion?
My constant Friend is he;
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know he watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know he watches me.

Refrain:
I sing because I’m happy,
I sing because I’m free;
For his eye is on the sparrow,
And I know he watches me.

“Let not your heart be troubled,”
His tender word I hear,
And resting on his goodness,
I lose my doubts and fears;
Though by the path he leadeth,
But one step I may see;
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know he watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know he watches me. [Refrain]

Whenever I am tempted,
Whenever clouds arise;
When songs give place to sighing,
When hope within me dies,
I draw the closer to him,
From care he sets me free;
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know he watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know he watches me
