Pause to Praise

Life has a way of overwhelming you sometimes. Have you ever had those days where you’ve got too many tasks to complete and not enough hours in the day? I’ve been feeling that way right now, especially with school, work and life. There are always going to be the things you have to do, then the things you want to do, and you’ve got to find a way to balance it with being present for your spouse and kids. There are only so many late nights and early early mornings I can swing before it starts to take its toll on my attitude. Then I start saying and doing things I regret because I’m actually tired but not letting myself rest.

Moms get tired. Alot. Moms get tired alot. It’s ok to get tired. We aren’t Wonder Women. I’ve learned that rather than pushing through, I need to let myself take a break, even if it’s only for 30 minutes. Today is one of those days. When I get like this, I tell my son that mom needs a 30 minute break and I head into another room to recharge with peace and quiet. I sat down in my chair and started telling God, “Lord, I don’t know how I’m going to get everything done. And honestly God, I’m feeling overwhelmed already and what I really want to do is take a nap. Please show me how to prioritize my time right now and give me your peace in knowing that I will get it all done the way it’s supposed to happen, not the way I think it should.” Amen.

I picked up my Bible and asked God to give me something that would refresh me so that I could pick back up and keep moving through my day. I flipped open my Bible to Psalm 146 and began to read, looking for something that God wanted to say to me about what I asked him for right now. Here’s what the psalmist wrote:

“Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord, O my soul. I will praise the Lord all of my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live. Do not put your trust in princes, in mortal men, who cannot save. When their spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans come to nothing. Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord his God, the maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them– the Lord who remains faithful forever. He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. The lord sets prisoners free, the Lord gives sight to the blind, the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down, the Lord loves the righteous. The Lord watches over the alien and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked. The Lord reigns forever, your God, O Zion, for all generations. Praise the Lord.”

God doesn’t want us to worry about the stuff we have to complete. He doesn’t want us to worry about our schedules. He loves us. He is saying that we are blessed because He is our help. He just wants us to praise him for who He is and because he’s already taken care of it for us. As clear and simple as this seems, it can be incredibly challenging to utter out praises to God, especially in the middle of circumstances and deadlines that have us feeling a little anxious, and like I said before, short on time. Nonetheless, I thanked Him because I came to Him with a problem and He offered His solution: praise. I turned the page and Psalm 147:10 drew my attention: “His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse, nor his delight in the legs of a man; the Lord delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in His unfailing love.” It’s like God put a p.s. on what He wanted to say to me.

He loves you. Just trust him. He’s not asking you to do everything in your own strength and get Him to put a blessing on it after the fact. Put your hope in his unfailing love for you. He will get you through this time too.

I added this song by Casting Crowns to help lead you in taking a moment to pause to praise. Xo.
